Is heat or cold typically better for a strained muscle from lifting?

I pulled my lower back on the left side on Friday, and it's much better having rested it over the weekend, but I didn't really do any treatment on it. I'm wondering however, is heat better or is cold better? Or is it a matter of try both and see which works better for you?
