Dear Healthy Redditors. I am sure many nutrionists are aware of the evidence/study which claims as a conclusion
"Beta-carotene supplementation has not been shown to have any beneficial effect on cancer prevention. Conversely, it was associated with increased risk not only of lung cancer but also of gastric cancer at doses of 20-30 mg day(-1), in smokers and asbestos workers"
I am quite scientifically illiterate (working on getting better) but do not posses the ability to determine what a study means, whether it was conducted properly, what the implications are etc.
I've been told by Doctors, Nutrionists, Physical Therapists to be very weary of medical Journalism and even of study results as replication etc is needed to confirm results and people whose studies get headlines are more likely to get future funding.
I am a smoker (about 3 cigarettes a day) and that is a very terrible habit, this much atleast I know. However I am wondering if anyone would be helpful enough to let me know if I should stop taking my multi-vitamins which have (I have no idea what this means) - Vitamin A (29% from Beta Carotene) 3500 IU
I can't even do the math to convert IU's into Mg so that should give you an idea of how out of my depth I am in this field.
Please help if you can, I would truly appreciate your input . I know the solution is to quit smoking and I will but should I cease using Beta-Carotene in the meantime? Do you guys and girls put a lot of weight on this study? Is there any consensus on this?
Thank you for reading this post.
