Beginner here, I have recently put in my application to joint the Navy as an officer and I need to make sure that I am in as good of shape as possible before I leave for OCS. My current routine is to knock out 3 sets each or push-ups and sit-ups when I wake up and again before I go to bed. I can only do half pull-ups currently, so I have also added 3 sets of eccentric pull-ups every other day to help improve. I will also run 2 miles every 2-3 days (which will increase to 4 miles once I improve), and run using the couch-to-5k program with my wife (currently week 4 after our daughter was born) on most of those off days. I currently am 6'1", 155 lbs, so I am also taking in extra calories via fruit/nut/grain snacks in order to put on some extra weight as well.
I was doing the startbodyweight routine and then switched to this routine about 2 weeks ago. Even though it's kicking my ass, I feel like I am not making the progress I should. I have so many questions about getting physically prepared that it's completely daunting. Is there such a thing as too much? Should I throw in rest days into my routine and, if so, should I rest from cardio and body weight or just one or the other? Should I do more? There is a local gym in my area with free weights, would my progress be maximized there? I have no idea if/when I would be called to report to OCS, and I want to do every thing I can to make sure I don't extend my stay. Any help, advice, or input would be greatly appreciated.
